are limited by low SNR. However, we anticipate improvement in SNR and vessel contrast enhancement with the development of high-field-strength 3-T MR imaging units. Furthermore, the approval of highrelaxivity blood-pool contrast agents will augment intravascular signal intensity and overall vessel contrast enhancement, particularly with the short TRs that are required for rapid image acquisition. In conclusion, time-resolved contrast-enhanced MRA is emerging as means of imaging intracranial circulation with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Work must still be done to allow the acquisition of full 3D image volumes with subsecond frame rates. However, the acquisition of submillimeter isotropic volumes to depict intracranial circulation with subsecond frame rates are on the horizon.

Resection of Pediatric Brain Tumors: Intraoperative Ultrasound Revisited

BACKGROUND Extent of resection is a very important prognostic marker in most pediatric brain tumors. Intraoperative imaging facilitates resection control. Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is a cost-effective alternative to intraoperative magnetic resonance, but scant literature addresses its utility in this context. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed all pediatric brain tumors operated at ou...

Gross-total surgery of supratentorial low-grade gliomas under intraoperative MR guidance.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Length of survival of patients with low-grade glioma correlates with the extent of tumor resection. These tumors, however, are difficult to distinguish intraoperatively from normal brain tissue, often leading to incomplete resection. Our goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of intraoperative MR guidance in achieving gross-total resection. METHODS We studied 12 patient...

3T intraoperative MRI for management of pediatric CNS neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE High-field-strength intraoperative MR imaging has emerged as a powerful adjunct for resection of brain tumors. However, its exact role has not been firmly established. We sought to determine the impact of 3T-intraoperative MRI on the surgical management of childhood CNS tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated patient data from a single academic children's hospital du...

Usefulness of Fluorescence-Guided-Surgery in Achieving Gross Total Resection of Malignant Glioma: Evaluation Using Mr Volumetric Study

Introduction: Malignant gliomas are highly infiltrative and aggressive primary brain tumors. Achieving gross total resection (GTR) using conventional white light microsurgical technique is a challenge. Five-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) can be used as an adjunct for the surgery of adult malignant glioma and improves the rate of gross total resection and patient survival. The use of this method in...

Correlation of factors predicting intraoperative brain shift with successful resection of malignant brain tumors using image-guided techniques.

BACKGROUND Intraoperative brain shift may cause inaccuracy of stereotactic image guidance on the basis of preoperatively acquired imaging data. The purpose of our study was to determine whether factors predicting brain shift affect the success of image-guided resection of malignant brain tumors. METHODS We retrospectively studied 54 patients who underwent image-guided resections of histopatho...
